Description
When we focus on writing down only what happened and our thoughts about it, we may actually feel worse. NVC journaling invites us to go beyond the surface of what happened.
With NVC journaling, we self-connect deeply. We peel away our evaluations from our stories, become clearer about our inner experience (our feelings and what’s driving those feelings), and try to connect with what might be going on for someone else (humanizing empathy – this could also be for another inner voice). Our self-empathy and empathy readies us for the final part of journaling, namely deciding what we might have wanted to have done and what we might want to do next or next time.
In this way, for example, I was able to find a constructive way to respond when my four kids were arguing with each other and the house was messy. The first time this happened, I had turned into what I call Army General Mom, telling everyone to stop arguing and directing them each to clean part of the house. The next time it happened, I was ready because I had journaled about my first experience. I was able to ask the kids for a couple of minutes to calm down my spinning, overwhelmed head so that I could be present for them. They immediately paused, I gave myself some emergency empathy, and then I was able to listen and support them in resolving their differences. That experience was far more connecting.
In this session, you may be joined by others who also wish to journal with NVC. NVC journaling with others over time tends to be, in my experience, even more powerful. I have witnessed NVC journaling with a group over time save marriages, facilitate peaceful divorce, support nurturing parenting, and stave off unhealthy workplace stress. The key is self-connection and compassion. Being received in a safe environment can support us in accepting ourselves and in learning.
PS: We can also use journaling to celebrate more deeply!
This registration is for a single journaling session. Separate sessions are tentatively scheduled for the 3rd week in February, July, and August at the same hours. If there is more interest, we can schedule it more often. Contact Elke for details.
