Description
We all disagree. Indeed, we seem to partner with opposites to keep our lives balanced. We can see things differently when it comes to the household, our finances, problem-solving, spirituality, sexuality, and parenting. How do we stay connected and find a way forward in the midst of these differences so that we can stay loving and committed and feel fulfilled in our lives together?
Over 2 days, Keeping your Intimate Partnership Alive introduces you to how to communicate clearly and collaboratively so that you can be honest AND increase understanding. Specifically, the course offers insight into a way to:
- Reframe messages that marriage researcher Dr. John Gottman found breaks down relationships: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling
- Separate what happens from your interpretations of what these words/actions mean
- Shift unpleasant feelings including anger with self-empathy
- Unpack triggers to get clear on what you want to do or ask for
- Express appreciation more fully and celebrate more deeply
This series, which is designed for people who are dating, engaged, or newly married who want to invest in building a stronger relationship foundation, uses a variety of learning tools such as demos, roleplays, The Road to Connection Game scenarios, personal reflection, dyad exercises, and more. During the sessions you will have the opportunity to practice using life examples.
Included: Partnership worksheets. Postcard-sized feelings and needs list. You may receive other tools based on the needs of the group, such as an anger tool.
Note: If your relationship is significantly strained, the series can give you valuable tools for rebuilding your connection. If there is no history of physical violence in your partnership, you are welcome to join. There are no quick fixes, but it is possible to rebuild your connection. If you like, I can refer to you colleagues who support couples in significantly strained relationships.
Note: If there are fewer than 5 registrants, we will reschedule the class.
